Brahamgupta (598 - 668 AD)

Born 598, Bhinmal, Rajasthan.

Indian mathematician and astronomer.

He was first to use zero as a number.

Found Pythagorean triples.

He was first to say that two negative numbers multiplied together equal a positive number.

Significant works on Geometry including Cyclic Quadrilaterals.

First person to discuss the method of finding a cyclic quadrilateral with rational sides.

Gave the solution to the general linear equation.

Gave two solutions to the general quadratic equation.

One of the most accomplished of the Ancient India Astronomers.

Brahmagupta’s Formula is a way to find the area of an inscribed quadrilateral.

These are known as Cyclic Quadrilateral.

\[ \text{Area} = \sqrt{(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)(s-d)} \]

where \(s\) is the semiperimeter of the quadrilateral:

\[ s = \frac{a + b + c + d}{2} \]

Where p, q, r, s are sides of the quadrilateral, and sp = the semi-perimeter

He also had a profound and direct influence on Islamic Astronomy and Byzantine Astronomy.

Died in 665, Ujjain.
