Mathematics Exhibition

This is the oldest Sanskrit mantra which leads the reciter to the path of enlightenment. Holding this prayer in our hearts and remembering the extraordinary personality Srinivasa Ramanujan, we celebrate National Mathematics Day on his birth anniversary, 22 December. His unique vision of mathematics as spiritual metaphors, and his philosophical take on equations, illuminates the symbiosis of math and spirituality.

Ramanujan’s achievements in the field of mathematics are still highly regarded across the globe. Despite being born in a poor family and having no formal education in pure mathematics, he formulated and solved some of the most important mathematical theorems that were once considered unsolvable.

In 1917, Ramanujan was elected as a member of the London Mathematical Society, and in 1918, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, one of the youngest ever to achieve the feat. He left behind three notebooks with pages of unpublished results, which mathematicians continued to study for years.

Ramanujan showed that no matter the challenges one faces, greatness can be achieved with passion and hard work. The American mathematician Bruce C. Berndt noted how Hardy, a renowned mathematician, rated Ramanujan’s genius at 100, while giving himself a mere 25.

Despite his lack of formal training, Ramanujan’s intuition and inspired thinking made up for it. Hardy once said, “He combined a power of generalisation, a feeling for form, and a capacity for rapid modification of his hypotheses that made him, in his own peculiar field, without a rival in his day.”

Ramanujan often spoke about the connection between mathematics and a higher power. He believed his insights were divine, famously saying, “An equation for me has no meaning unless it expresses a thought of God.” His legacy continues to inspire mathematicians and thinkers worldwide.
